How to Get the Most out of 1 Session

Do you want to get the most out of your therapeutic session?

Do you want to use your time well?

Or make the most out of your investment?

Or crave healing?

Here are a few simple steps that add up to big returns:

1.      Journal about your thoughts and feelings the week beforehand. Both challenging and positive. Re-read what you’ve written and see if any insights come to you. Write them down, and write down any unanswered questions you still have.

2.      An alternative to journaling is audio messages to yourself, or talking with a friend.

3.      Imagine coming to your session and what you will talk about. If it’s more than 2 things, make a list. Prioritize 1 main issue you can dig deeply into.

4.      Arrive 5-15 minutes early to settle. Sit and breathe deeply, or review your journal.

5.      Plan to have an hour of space after your session. Why go from a big endeavor right back to the grind? If you want to change or heal, you need time to assimilate what’s shifted in your mind, body, and/or spirit. Plan to take a slow walk afterward, a warm bath, or do more journaling.

PS. If you have zoom sessions, commit to the same steps above, AND spend 5 minutes limiting distractions before you start. Noise? Pets? Get a cup of water ready. Close other windows on your screen. Enter into the shared virtual space mindfully.

Don’t have time to prepare or leave space afterward?

Take a conscious breath. It’s okay.

The best option is to stay as relaxed as you can.

Let your therapist know that you don’t have much time available outside of session, but you want to spend the last 5 minutes of the session doing some assimilation. This could look like a short guided meditation or a simple review of the main points you want to take with you. You could also consider pocketing a special object like a stone, that helps you remember what you touched in session as you go throughout your week.

For me, the most powerful exercise is talking to my therapist in my head, and imagining what they might say. This helps me process outside of our time together, and experience the benefits of the relationship even when I’m not literally in session.
