Vesica Piscis: Nature Therapy & Sacred Listening

When two circles intersect, they form an area that is an "ellipse-like" shape, like a lens. It's called a Vesica Piscis, which is Latin for "fish bladder." An actual fish bladder can be used for buoyancy.

Buoyancy is about staying afloat (instead of capsizing) and riding the waves. Maybe we can even become a perch for a bird or some other creature.

Oh my gosh ~ there is so much buoyancy in the integration of nature therapy and sacred listening. (The stream of sacred listening I'm most immersed in has been traditionally known as spiritual direction- but I don't direct you, we listen for the direction of Spirit within you).

It's like the kind of buoyancy that Rumi speaks of...

"So the sea-journey goes on, and who knows where!

Just to be held by the ocean is the best luck we could have.

It's a total waking up!

Why should we grieve that we've been sleeping?

It doesn't matter how long we've been unconscious.

We're groggy, but let the guilt go.

Feel the motions of tenderness around you,

the buoyancy."

To be held by nature and spirit, in the container of sacred listening and non-judgmental acceptance and presence, we find buoyancy.

In this podcast Nourishing from Within recorded with Amy Glattly,

starting at minute 10,

she and I explore the tastes of:

  • Is nature therapy with our body or psyche?

  • Who opens the door?

  • Who dunks in the Kaw?

  • What's the difference between psychotherapy and spiritual counseling?

  • The power of water

  • How to bathe in wind

  • Observing the subtle, listening to the unspoken

  • And more. :)

We started the conversation slowly and then worked up to the juicy laughter of THIS-IS-IT. How did we unravel such a mystery as this sacred, therapeutic path meandering toward wholeness? Was it the red winged black birds swooping around us as they fought for a mate?? They definitely gave us insight. When we know nature, we can know our own nature better.

Please freely share this podcast, also available on Spotify, with anyone who wonders how nature therapy and eco-spiritual direction intersect, or with anyone who loves listening in to intimate soulful-cognitive ponderings.
