Bones & Cards: Why I'm not into Tarot

people having fun rafting on a summers day

Many of my clients are into something I'm not: Tarot

To be clear: I'm not against tarot.

In fact, I've never studied it

As a principle, I find it best to not be against things we don't understand.

I simply found other spiritual practices first, and I've dug deeply in them.

<<<This is honoring my path.

So I wasn't introduced to tarot, but I support those who are.

<<<This is basic respect.

I am deeply curious about and encouraging of the meaningful role of tarot in other's lives.

<<<This is interspirituality.

I love when clients come to sessions telling me about their card readings. I get to know about their lives, their inner workings, and their spiritual connections. We deepen the work.

Same with astrology.I know my sign, but I can't tell ya much about yours. If you want to talk about your sign, the current moon phase we're in, or mercury retrograde, I'm all for it. I love the stars and believe they are powerful- how could they not be?!  Over millennia they guided ocean-daring adventurers, spoke whispers to night sky-watchers, and gave affirmations of the route to freedom for enslaved people.

The bones of my ancestors are important to me. I often consider what my blood lineage taught (and didn't teach) me, and what my spiritual lineage continues to offer to me through the ethers. The ethers mean subtle, omnipresent field of divine energy that permeates and connects all of existence (the non-material substratum from which the physical world manifests).  Through this we may connect with the ancestral realms- the ones most of us don't see or have a great grasp of. I may not have as strong a familial sense as many tribal cultures do. But I have personal dedication to kindling the importance of ancestors in my life.

Many of my clients are also into crystals and stones. I can't tell you what most of the rock properties mean, but I truly enjoy reading about them and adoring their beauty when I visit our local stores The Village Witch, 3rd Eye Sadie's, Empath Crafts. This branch of metaphysics could be related to a branch I learned about.

The paths that called me to dive deep are Vedanta yoga, engaged Buddhism, mystical Christianity, and universal Sufism. Sometimes, I wish I just had 1 path instead of 4. Wise people often recommend digging one well 6 feet deep, rather than 6 wells one foot deep. Ultimately, we might be digging into the same reservoir. Even Pope Francis said, "Every religion is a way to arrive at God…Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, Christian—they are different paths."

Though called to different paths, sacred listening is about listening for the depth of sacred movement happening in and through any channel where the Divine becomes more known.

When folks come to me with their practices, I join them in inquiry and revelation.

For example, if you came with a stone, I might ask,

  • What do you feel when you hold that stone? What memories come to mind? Where do you feel the stone's energy in your body? Do feel drawn to put the stone somewhere on your body.

  • If that stone could bring its power to 1 place in your home, where would it be?

  • When was the first time you met that stone? When was the first time you remember connecting with its energy?

  • If you had a piece of that stone the size of a car, how would you connect with it? How would you play with it or utilize it?

We have an amazing invitation from the universe to get to know each other's precious journeys. Dominant culture may scoff, rebuke, or aggressively challenge what's "different."  Diversity affirming subculture instead says, "This is beautiful. Please say more. I want to see you." We don't have to be 100% knowledgeable of each other's ways... or we wouldn't have space to evolve new aspects of our aliveness. We can look for the people in our lives who bring curiosity, respect, and joy to our joy. (If you don't already have enough of that, I welcome you find it in a live group experience with me.)

Ps. In addition to Youtube, I have some posts on Facebook and Instagram if you want to check out more bits of inspiration and insight.
